Mindsip insights from this episode:

Eliminate atherosclerosis from top causes of death

Given our current understanding and tools, atherosclerosis, the world's leading cause of death, should not even be in the top 10.

Address four horsemen of longevity to enhance lifespan

The four major impediments to lifespan are atherosclerosis, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic disease, which acts as a risk amplifier for the other three.

Mitigate metabolic disease risks to lower heart disease and cancer chances

Metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease are dangerous primarily because they amplify the risk of heart disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease by about twofold.

Delay disease onset to achieve longevity like centenarians

The superpower of people who live to 100 is not that they live longer with chronic diseases, but that they delay the onset of these diseases by about two decades.

Act before risk: Don't wait for heart attack warning signs

Standard medical practice often waits until a person's 10-year risk of a heart attack is high before acting, which is like waiting until you see the edge of a cliff before hitting the brakes.

Utilize ApoB test as affordable heart risk predictor

An ApoB blood test is the most powerful predictor of cardiovascular disease and is very inexpensive, with a non-HDL cholesterol test being a 'poor man's substitute'.

Recognize ApoB's role as a causal factor in heart disease

ApoB, a protein that carries cholesterol, is a necessary but not sufficient cause for atherosclerosis, meaning you cannot get the disease without it.

Treat high ApoB as a smoking risk to prevent atherosclerosis

Since high ApoB is known to cause atherosclerosis, we should aim to lower it early in life, just as we advise people to never start smoking to prevent lung cancer.
