We are undergoing a huge technological experiment. In our pockets we have tiny technological miracles through which we can communicate, instantly, with anyone on the planet. We are constantly bombarded with endless information. But what impact is all this having on our brain? Why is it important to allow our brains to drift into random thoughts and be creative?

I discuss all this with neuroscientist and brain surgeon, Dr Rahul Jandial, who loves technology but believes that we need to structure some boundaries around its use – especially for children. We talk about the impact of music on the brain and what it means to be in flow state.

Dr Jandial explains what happens in the brain when we engage in what he calls “meditative breathing” and why he is such a huge proponent of it. He explains how his knowledge of brain health has shaped the way he parents– from encouraging navigational skills in his children to exposing them to a diverse range of experiences. It seems where the brain is concerned – if you don’t use it, you lose it! Finally, he draws on his years of experience as a brain surgeon to share some practical tips that can help us all get the best out of our minds.

Mindsip insights from this episode:

Navigate actively to enhance cognitive reserve against dementia

Actively navigating instead of relying on GPS exercises your brain's "grid cells," which helps build cognitive reserve against dementia.

Utilize hypnagogic state to enhance creativity

The transition from wakefulness to sleep is a unique state where your brain has both awake and sleep waves, making it a portal for creativity.

Focus on learning process, not mastery, for brain benefits

The brain benefits most from the process of trying to learn a new language or instrument, not from actually achieving mastery.

Prioritize uninterrupted sleep for better brain restoration

Five hours of uninterrupted sleep can be more restorative for your brain than eight hours of fragmented sleep.

Reevaluate 10,000-hour rule for mastery beyond practice

The 10,000-hour rule for achieving mastery is a misconception because it doesn't account for talent, as some surgeons are still not good after 10,000 operations.

Strengthen brain pathways by using your non-dominant hand

Forcing yourself to use your non-dominant hand recruits and strengthens neural pathways on the opposite side of the brain that might otherwise wither.

Prioritize quality sleep over short sleep durations

Getting only 1 to 1.5 hours of sleep can be more detrimental to focus than pulling an all-nighter.

Utilize meditative breathing to calm brain activity

Meditative breathing calms the brain's electrical activity in a way that is functionally similar to a vagal nerve stimulator used to treat epilepsy.
