Mindsip insights from this episode:

Avoid high doses of Vitamin D for cancer and cardiovascular protection

The largest Vitamin D study, the VITAL trial, suggests that as long as you are not deficient, taking higher doses does not provide additional protection against cancer or cardiovascular disease.

Adjust Vitamin D dosage in microvitamin to align with new guidelines

Based on the new guidelines, the speaker reduced the Vitamin D in his own supplement, microvitamin, from 2,000 to 1,000 international units.

Avoid mega-dosing K2 and magnesium beyond daily recommendations

Similar to Vitamin D, there is no evidence that mega-dosing with supplements like Vitamin K2 and magnesium offers any benefits beyond meeting the recommended daily intakes.

Supplement with 3,000 IU of Vitamin D daily to reduce pregnancy risks

Supplementing with around 3,000 IU of Vitamin D daily during pregnancy can lower the risk of pre-eclampsia and preterm birth.

Eliminate Vitamin D testing for better health outcomes

Applying an engineering principle to medicine, it's better to eliminate the process of Vitamin D testing rather than trying to optimize for a specific blood level that has no evidence-based benefit.

Skip routine vitamin D tests due to unclear optimal levels

New guidelines recommend against routine Vitamin D blood tests because we don't currently know what the optimal blood level is to target for better health outcomes.

Adjust vitamin D intake to 600-800 IU daily for optimal health

After 13 years of new data, the Endocrine Society now recommends a lower dose of 600-800 IU of Vitamin D daily for healthy adults, down from its previous 1,500-2,000 IU recommendation.

Reevaluate low vitamin D as a consequence, not a cause of illness

Low Vitamin D levels may be a consequence of poor health, such as being sick and staying indoors, rather than the actual cause of the illness.
